School of Music faculty and composition alumni will be highlighted in American Public Media’s Pipedreams special program broadcast in celebration of the 150th anniversary of Minnesota’s statehood. The program, “A Minnesota Organ Book,” will feature works by Minnesota composers on the state’s sesquicentennial, Sunday, May 11, 2008. Featured SOM composers include David Evan Thomas, Carol Barnett, Cary John Franklin, Anne Kilstofte, Stephen Paulus, Monte Mason, Janika Vandervelde, and Linda Tutas Haugen. The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, including SOM faculty members, will perform works by Schubert, Stravinsky and Dvorák in Zankel Hall as a part of Carnegie Hall’s 2007-08 season on Sunday, May 11 at 7:30 pm. SOM faculty performing with the SPCO include Thomas Ashworth, Julia Bororad-Kogan, Gary Bordner, Christopher Brown, and Charles Ullery. Anna Schultz's (Visiting Assistant Professor, Ethnomusicology) article, "The Collision of Genres and Collusion of Participants: Marathi Rastriya Kirtan and the Communication of Hindu Nationalism," was published in the most recent issue of Ethnomusicology, 52 (1). Also, in March Schultz traveled to Vancouver to present an invited paper, “‘You Can Put It in Any Air’: Disarticulations of Repertoire from Style in Indo-Guyanese-American Temples,” for the Performing Culture in South Asia: New Technologies, Texts, and Traditions conference at the University of British Columbia.

Congratulations to voice students Rebecca Fadell (student of Glenda Maurice) and Anna Hersey (student of Lawrence Weller) on their National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) regional competition victories. Both students will go on to compete in the NATS National Competition Finals in Nashville, TN on June 26, 2008.

Elliott Miles McKinley (PhD, Composition, '08, student of Doug Geers and Alex Lubet) recently accepted a position as Assistant Professor of Music at Indiana University East in Richmond, IN. McKinley will teach theory and composition as well as head the music department where he will develop and lead their music program. His appointment starts in the fall.

K. Christian McGuire (MA, Music, '07) will present excerpts from his thesis, Symphonia Caritatis: The Cistercian Chants of Hildegard von Bingen at the 43rd International Congress on Medieval Studies in Kalamazoo on May 8-11. In late May both he and President Harry Chalmiers will represent the McNally-Smith College of Music at the 25th Anniversary of the International Society for Hildegard von Bingen studies at Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia. Audrey Stottler of the New York Metropolitan Opera, will present an opera workshop at MacPhail Center for Music for classical voice students. The workshop is open to all students studying classical music, lieder, opera arias and art songs. A Theater/Movement Specialist will be present to coach singers on blocking and dramatic expression. This is an opportunity for experienced singers interested in continuing or expanding their classical music/opera/lieder study. No audition is necessary to participate. Students are asked to prepare 1–3 selections for study. The class is offered from 6pm-9pm Tuesdays and Thursdays starting June 10.
